Why Dota 2 Dominates the Online Video Gaming Market

In 2019, the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) video game Dota 2 boasts upwards of 11 million players, making it one of the most-played games in the world. Since it was first released in 2013, Dota 2 has dominated its segment of the video game market, remaining incredibly popular.

One reason for Dota 2’s enduring success is that it continues the direct legacy of the original Dota, the first MOBA game. The first Dota started life as a Warcraft III mod, and drew little interest from Blizzard or other big game developers until its player base began to skyrocket. Dota 2 carries over the heroes, items and setup as the original Dota, and many players stick with the game setting they grew up with.

Another reason Dota 2 is such a massive success is the support of Valve, the game development company that created and supports Dota 2. Valve has been willing to inject massive amounts of cash into promoting Dota 2, both by constantly tweaking and adding new content and by supporting the eSports scene.

Dota 2 has one of the most lively and lucrative eSports tournament schedules, including The International, a yearly tournament in which players compete for grand prizes in excess of 10 million US dollars.

Dota 2’s prominence in eSports fuels interest in its player base, and contributes to keeping Dota among the most popular in the world of video games. Many Dota 2 players follow their favorite Dota 2 teams in a similar manner to supporters of traditional sports, watching matches both electronically and even attending big tournaments in person to cheer on their favorite players.
